Earthquake and Volcanic Eruption in Iceland
Today, May 29, an earthquake occurred on the Reykjanes Peninsula in Iceland, triggering a volcanic eruption. This marks the fifth case of a volcano eruption since December of last year. According to Sky News, the epicenter of the earthquake was located north of the fishing town of Grindavik.
Evacuation and Impact
Following the earthquake, an eruption began, leading to the evacuation of 3800 residents of Grindavik and tourists from the Blue Lagoon thermal resort located nearby. Witnesses reported that lava was flowing from the volcano to a height of about 50 meters. This is not the first eruption on the peninsula, with previous incidents occurring in January and March.
Due to the threat to the lives of local residents, authorities have decided to evacuate 4000 people from Grindavik. The eruption, which began on January 14, was accompanied by an earthquake.
