Ukraine seeks compromise on international debt

The Government of Ukraine Negotiates Debt Restructuring with Bondholders

The Government of Ukraine is seeking to reach an agreement with a group of bondholders regarding the restructuring of the international debt of about $20 billion, as the deadline for the agreement is approaching, after the Russian invasion in 2022 led to a suspension of payments.

Finance Minister Serhiy Marchenko stated that negotiations are ongoing, and he hopes to reach an agreement by August 1.

Official consultations with bondholders have been going on for almost two weeks. Ukraine aims to restructure its debt in order to maintain access to international markets and at the same time fulfill the requirements of the International Monetary Fund (IMF).

«We continue constructive discussions with representatives of creditors through our advisors,» the government’s statement said.

Marchenko emphasized that Ukraine’s economy remains fragile and requires significant support from partners.

«Timely debt restructuring is a critically important part of this support,» he added.
