Two cities in Kharkiv region to be renamed: Verkhovna Rada supports new names

Renaming of Cities in Kharkiv Region

In the Kharkiv region, the renaming of two cities — Krasnohrad and Persomaisk — will take place. MP Roman Lozynskyi announced this decision.

Approved Names

On April 3, the Committee of the Verkhovna Rada approved new names for the cities:

  • Krasnohrad will be renamed to Berestyn;
  • Persomaisk will be renamed to Zlatopol.

Local Support

In a vote held in Krasnohrad in October 2023, residents supported keeping the old name, believing it means «beautiful city.» However, the Institute of National Memory pointed out Soviet origins of the name.

In Persomaisk, a new name was chosen after several unsuccessful attempts. In March 2024, residents voted in favor of the name Zlatopol.

The Verkhovna Rada’s Committee also supported the renaming of several villages and settlements in the Kharkiv region:

  • Settlement of Pershotravneve — Ridne.
