Romanian Arms Manufacturers Modernize TR-85M1 «Bizonul» Tanks
Romanian arms manufacturers have decided to carry out a large-scale modernization of their TR-85M1 «Bizonul» tanks, produced before 2009. Despite their membership in the Warsaw Pact, Romania has sought military independence for many years by developing its own modifications of Soviet base tanks.
As part of this program, it is planned to upgrade 108 TR-85 tanks to the TR-85M1R standard. The improvements include replacing electronics and fire control systems, improving observation devices, and updating communication systems. Additionally, the successful modernization of the T-54/T-55 family has led to the creation of tanks such as the TR-580, TR-77-580, and TR-85.
It is unknown whether the modernization will be limited to just the TR-85M1 variant or if it will also include the TR-85 tanks that remain in service.
