Near the coast of Canada, the «Hunters» team has discovered and revealed the ship «Quest», which was captained by the renowned Antarctic explorer Ernest Shackleton.
The ship, which sank over 60 years ago, was found almost intact, according to CNN.
An international expert group located the «Quest» using sonar after 17 hours of searching. This followed months of scientific research and analysis that identified the most probable areas to search for the sunken vessel.
The ship «Quest» was found about 28 kilometers off the shores of Canada. Ernest Shackleton, a famous Anglo-Irish polar explorer, led three British expeditions to Antarctica.
During a stopover on South Georgia Island in 1922, Shackleton died of a heart attack and was buried on site. The explorer’s team on the ship «Quest» continued their journey, but the ship met with disaster due to ice actions. After the crew evacuated, the ship returned to Cape Town, South Africa.
«Shackleton is known for his bravery and leadership qualities in crisis situations. The tragedy is that this was the only death to occur on any of the ships under his command,» emphasized expedition leader John Geiger.
Later, the «Quest» was sold to a Norwegian company and took part in several expeditions, and was then used for seal hunting. The ship met with disaster on May 5, 1962, due to ice in the Labrador Sea near the shores of Canada. The crew evacuated but marked the last known location of the «Quest», approximately 2.5 kilometers from the discovery site.
Currently, the ship is situated vertically at a depth of 390 meters. Researchers plan to study it and document the artifacts found.
