Herons Return to Odesa Region After Escape to Africa
Herons affected by war have returned to the Odesa region after a long forced escape to Africa. Dr. Ivan Rusev, a biologist and employee of the National Natural Park «Tuzlovski Limans», reported that these birds were forced to leave their nests last summer due to strong explosions and danger in their habitats.
«In the summer of 2023, herons were able to form a small colony on acacia trees in our park. However, at the end of the season, they were forced to leave these places due to military actions. After travelling around the national park in search of a safe place, they returned to Africa in autumn. Now they are back here,» said Ivan Rusev.
Despite their return, Rusev noted that there is a possibility that this year the herons may not find a suitable place to nest in the Tuzlovski Limans.
«Their usual nesting place is currently occupied by war, and it is likely that the birds will not be able to find a place there to raise their chicks. But we hope and believe that the situation will improve, and the herons will be able to successfully reproduce,» summarized the biologist.
