Climate Change and Foreign Species Pressure: How It Affects Fish in the Odessa Region

The populations of local fish species in critical state

The populations of local fish species living in the rivers and estuaries of the Odessa region are in a critical state.

Experts warn about alarming decrease

These conclusions were made by experts from the Institute of Fisheries and Marine Ecology after analyzing data on the ichthyological and hydrobiological state of the water bodies of the Black Sea.

Main concerns among species

The head of the Black Sea department of the institute, Serhiy Khutory, told «Dumska» that the most concern is caused by species such as chub, ide, bleak, roach, and rudd. These species are endemic to the waters of the Odessa region, but their numbers have sharply decreased recently.

Climate change as the main reason

«We observe that the climate is getting warmer, winters are milder and less rainy. This leads to a decrease in natural water runoff, which, in turn, lowers the water level in rivers and estuaries. As a result, the spawning areas for fish decrease, the overall mineralization and salinity of the water increase. Consequently, the number of comfortable living, growth, and spawning places for fish decreases.»

A progressing depression of local populations

Although the situation is not catastrophic, and carp, crucian carp, silver carp, catfish, and zander can still be found in the markets, the overall trend can be described as a progressing depression of local populations of species,» the scientist noted.
