In recent years, artificial intelligence has been actively infiltrating all spheres of human life. Scientists are beginning to express concern that soon it may prove to be much more efficient than human cognitive activity, and may even threaten its existence altogether. This fear is not unfounded, as there are already numerous examples that should be carefully considered.
Mass Extinctions and Artificial Intelligence
Mass extinctions that have taken place on Earth were natural phenomena, independent of human influence. For example, about 250 million years ago, the largest biological mass extinction occurred – the Permian extinction, when almost 90% of organisms disappeared from the planet.
However, artificial intelligence is created by humans and can have unpredictable consequences. It is being actively integrated into all areas of our lives, replacing human work and causing new ethical and social problems. Recently, an article was published in the journal Acta Astronautica in which astronomer Michael Garrett from the University of Manchester expresses concern about the development of artificial superintelligence.
Garrett emphasizes the importance of controlling and regulating artificial intelligence so that it does not become a threat to our civilization. According to him, underestimating this problem could lead to the demise of society within just 200 years.
Not only Garrett, but a group of NASA scientists in 2022 warned of the possibility of the destruction of earthly life due to the development of artificial intelligence. This causes serious concern among scientists and researchers who are worried about the future of civilization.
Humanity has always been prone to risks and self-destruction. Active military conflicts, environmental issues, and now artificial intelligence increase the risks to our existence. Therefore, it is important to carefully study and control its impact on modern society.
Waiting for the full development of artificial intelligence will be a big mistake. Although its implementation is inevitable, we have the opportunity to influence the conditions of its development and protect civilization from possible negative consequences.
