In the Lviv Region, Honoring the Memory of Cossack Riflemen
In the Lviv region, the memory of the Cossack riflemen who won the battle for Mount Makovka 109 years ago was honored. This was reported by the Lviv Regional Military Administration (OVA) on Telegram, according to Ukrinform.
Celebrating the Victory in the Battle for Mount Makovka
In Lviv region, the 109th anniversary of the victory in the battle for Mount Makovka was celebrated. The commemorative event took place at the Memorial to the Ukrainian Cossack riflemen, located in Stryi. In honor of the fallen heroes, candles were lit and flowers were laid. Local clergy conducted a memorial service for the fallen soldiers.
Remembering the Fierce Battles
Representatives of the departments of OVA, clergy, and the public participated in the commemorative events. The battles for Makovka were fierce positional battles for the mountain in the Carpathians, which took place from April 29 to May 4, 1915, during World War I on the Eastern Front between the Austro-Hungarian 55th Infantry Division under the command of von Flayshner, which included 700 soldiers from the 1st and 2nd kurins of the Ukrainian Cossack riflemen, and the Russian troops of the 78th Infantry Division under General Alftan. The goal of the battles was to capture the strategic height — Mount Makovka to control the village of Kozova.
The summit was only captured on May 4 after using all available reserves. Due to heavy losses, the Russian troops were unable to continue the offensive and a week later were forced to retreat before the approaching Austrian units.
