Kharkiv cadet saves child abandoned in cold river

Artem Makarov, a Hero of Kharkiv National University

Artem Makarov, a first-year student at the Kharkiv National University of Internal Affairs, became a hero by saving a child who was thrown into the Southern Bug River in Vinnytsia by his mother. The incident occurred when the cadet, who was on sick leave, was returning from a clinic near the city waterfront. He heard children’s cries for help and saw a woman throw her baby into the water. Artem jumped over the fence and rushed into the cold water to save the child.

Makarov pulled the boy to shore and provided him with first aid. Police officers arrived at the scene and called for an ambulance. The child, suffering from hypothermia, was taken to the hospital, while his 40-year-old mother was detained for further proceedings.
