Rare Guests: Shining Ibises at Tuzlovski Estuaries

Incredible Glossy Ibises in Tuzlovski Limans

In the National Natural Park «Tuzlovski Limans», incredible birds — glossy ibises — have been noted. «They always appear first in the Tuzlovski Limans in spring, and then fly to the Danube Delta, where the largest population of nesting glossy ibises in the entire Black Sea region used to be. In our national park, they do not have the opportunity to nest, as there are no suitable habitats — specific willow bushes on which they like to build nests,» says park employee, Dr. Ivan Rusev, a biologist.

According to him, in the Danube Delta, everything was perfect for these birds — a real paradise on earth, but people destroyed the natural ecosystem (water cycles, shallows), and ibises became very rare guests for nesting. «In the Danube Delta, they are already forming colonies for reproduction… In the Tuzlovski Limans, ibises still migrate and move from liman to liman, but the powerful sounds of war scare them away. Every year from the second-third decade of April, they can be seen on the shallows of our limans,» the scientist explains. He adds that throughout the day, the birds tirelessly wander through the shallows of the Tuzlovski Limans in search of food. Using their long and curved, sword-like beaks to sift through the thick layer of mud, they manage to catch tasty morsels from there.
