Nissan has announced plans to launch a self-driving taxi service in Japan by the fiscal year 2027, based on their minivans.
Commercial Trials Starting Soon
According to Nissan, trials of the commercial robo-taxi service will begin in the current fiscal year, starting on April 1, in the Yokohama area, south of Tokyo. The automaker plans to collaborate with local authorities and operators to create new transportation solutions.
Addressing Mobility Issues
Mobility issues such as a shortage of drivers due to an aging population have prompted Nissan to develop this project. Since 2017, the company has been testing self-driving cars in Japan and other countries. Competitors such as Toyota and Honda are also planning to launch pilot robo-taxi projects in Tokyo in 2025-2026 after the legalization of «Level 4 autonomy» self-driving cars in Japan.
