24-Hour House Arrest for Suspect in Attack on Volunteer

The Obolonsky District Court of Kyiv has imposed a preventive measure on a 73-year-old man who is being tried for assaulting a volunteer. He has been placed under round-the-clock house arrest.

This was reported by the journalist from «Hromadske» from the courtroom.

The defendant will remain under house arrest until August 4, with exceptions for medical treatment or seeking shelter.

The defense stated that they have not yet decided whether to appeal the court’s decision.

The prosecutor requested full-time house arrest. He pointed out that the suspect had previously claimed that he was allegedly in a different place at the time of the crime. The prosecution believes that the defendant knows where the victim lives and may influence her. Additionally, as a pensioner, he may flee abroad.

The elderly man is being tried for committing hooliganism (part 2 of article 296 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine). This offense carries a sentence of up to 4 years in prison.

Previously, according to law enforcement officials, the man claimed that he did not admit his guilt. He allegedly stated that he does not remember the conflict with the girl in the video «due to his advanced age.»
